Gaining a competitive advantage in the modern global business environment is a complex process that requires skill, knowledge and creativity. The Manage 21st Century Business Strategy series of courses has been designed to equip you with all the knowledge you need to embark upon a career as a business consultant or strategist. It is also the ideal opportunity for those already in a business career to enhance their qualifications in order to qualify for promotion or advancement.
This series of courses have been designed by Copenhagen Business School, a leading business university with almost 23,000 students. The courses are presented by Professor Robert Austin (Management of Creativity and Innovation), Professor Marcus Moller Larsen (Strategic management and Globalization) and Professor Nicolai Progrebnyakov.
This Coursera specialization series consist of four courses. Lectures are presented by means of high definition lectures. At the end of the course you will create a comprehensive, realistic and holistic business strategy as a final practical assignment.
All the resources necessary to successfully complete this series of courses are included in the course fees. This include video lectures, practical assignments and practice quizzes. There are also peer reviews to provide you with valuable feedback.
- After successful completion of the series, a certificate is issued.
- You will be able to study at your own pace. The courses are presented regularly (approximately once a month) and it is possible to complete the entire series within four months.
- If you are unable to complete a specific course successfully you are allowed to transfer to the next session of that course without losing any credits.

At the end of this series of courses you will be able to create and defend a business strategy. You will learn hope to take global innovation and competition into account and you will be able to evaluate a variety of business scenarios. This is how the courses proceed:
Course 1 – Strategic Management
This course is presented over four weeks and you will need to set aside two to four hours every week for study purposes. This course focus on the importance of innovation and creativity in the modern business environment. You will learn how to adopt new and fresh ideas and you will understand the challenges inherent in the development of a business strategy.
During week one you will learn the real meaning of the word “strategy” and why it is so important to care about it.
In week two the evolution of strategy over time comes under the microscope. It is all about the many mistakes made in the past. You will learn how to recognize those mistakes and how to avoid repeating them.
Week three focus on the reasons why strategies need to change as the world, and especially the business environment changes. Important matters such as relentless globalization and the rapid advances made in the field of technology are discussed in detail.
Week four is dedicated to introducing you to the Capstone Project that you will be required to submit at the end of the series of courses.
Course 2 – Strategy Formulation
This course is all about the different components of an effective business strategy. At the end of the course you will be able to develop a strategy that will make provision for the very specific needs and vision of your organization. The course will require two to four hours of your time each week.
This first week focuses upon the foundation of of effective business strategies. Important concepts such as competitive advantage and value creation are discussed in detail.
In week two you will explore different industrial organization frameworks. The “Five Forces” framework is also discussed.
In week three resources and capabilities are the focus. You will learn how to take into account the resources and capabilities of the firm when developing a business strategy.
During week four you will learn all about the challenges and opportunities when operating on a global scale. You will also learn the differences between strategies for domestic firms and multi-national corporations.
Week five focuses upon techniques that can be used to make strategic decisions and in the final week, week six, you will apply your new knowledge to develop a strategy for a Danish company called e-Types.
Course 3 – Strategy Implementation
Even the most creative and innovative business strategy will fail if particular attention is not paid on the implementation of the strategy. This is what this course is all about: implementation. During the next six weeks you will learn a variety of techniques that will help to ensure that a strategy succeeds.
In week one an overview of the course is provided and you will then dive straight into the translation of a strategy into goals and metrics.
The vital task of aligning a business strategy with the organization structure is discussed during the second week. A strategy can only succeed if it is properly communicated to all concerned within the organization. This is what week three is about.
In week four you will learn how to identify risks and how to overcome resistance to the new business strategy.
Week five focuses on organizational culture and how it can have a positive or negative effect upon the success of a strategy. You will also learn how to change corporate culture in certain circumstances.
In week six, the final week of this course, you will learn how to use power and informal networks within an organization to facilitate the successful implementation of a strategy.
Course 4 – Strategic Management. Capstone Project
During this course you will be completing your Capstone Project. You will be able to choose one of four possible scenarios for your project.
During the first and second week the four options for the Capstone Project is discussed and explained. You will then make your choice.
During week three you will formulate ideas for your strategy and you can opt for a voluntary peer review of those ideas.
In week four you will develop your implementation strategy. You can once again volunteer for peer review.
Week five: It is now time to submit your Capstone Project.
There is an optional sixth week where you can submit a second project in order to gain even more experience in strategy development.
You need no prior experience or any other qualifications in order to enrol for and successfully complete this specialization series.
